Why You Should Covet A Kantha
We talk about our love of kantha a lot: kantha quilts, throws, blankets, ottomans & cushions- each is a truly unique vintage gem; timeless Indian textiles to treasure forever. But what makes them so special? And what exactly IS a kantha?
Kantha is a type of Bengali embroidered quilt- the word kantha referring to the running stitch which has been widely used in Bangladesh and West Bengal for centuries. Our kantha throws honour ancient traditions and are created by hand, using layer upon layer of softest time worn saris, which are carefully stitched together with close rows of delicate hand embroidered running stitch. Each kantha is fully reversible, super soft, machine washable and a labour of love, with each quilt taking between 45 -50 hours to create.
And how to use?
Kanthas are made to lay, drape and fold. And as they are made from pure cotton they make the cosiest bedspreads, adding instant colour to any bedroom. They are perfect for sofas too- drape over the arm of your sofa or tuck in around the seat cushions for an instant refresh.
Wether you're dining indoors or al fresco, kanthas make the best tablecloths (they're pure cotton so very easy to maintain). Blues and greens are ideal for Spring and Summer. Reds are perfect for festive tables. They make great picnic rugs too - and for dark corners of your home use our smaller kanthas and drape over side tables: add leafy plants or bright vases and dull corners are transformed. If you're a whizz with the sewing machine kanthas can be used to create cushions (floor cushions are great for teenage/student rooms), curtains or to cover ottomans and upholster foot stools. Our kantha throws are made from 6-8 layers of sari cloth, so they are super warm- but not over bulky.
We believe these are the smartest and softest kantha you will find anywhere. We hope you'll love them as much as we do.
